ポインセチアを毎年咲かせるのに重要な手順の一つは、９月下旬以降、毎日きっかり１４時間、完全な暗闇に置くこと。室内灯、街灯、その他あらゆる光は、開花を遅らせる。これを８～１０週間続ければ、１２月には花が咲く。
